Do you ever have one of those days..? You know the ones; when it’s all too hard and you just want to be anywhere but where you are. My Mum tells me that this photo sums up ‘those days’ for me when I was little. I was always happy, active, full on. Occasionally, like everyone, I’d have my downtime.
Mum says it was difficult to keep me off the beach, so this foam surfboard in the swimming pool was my consolation. Apparently I would lie on it and simply fall asleep – hence the reason Mum attached the foam bubble to my back, for safety!
I can remember so very clearly the feeling of lying there. I could dip a toe in the water. I could feel the subtle lapping. I can still even hear the sound of the water as it would go in and out of the catcher at the end of the pool. The foam board felt funny on my stomach and would squeak quietly when I moved.
I’m also told I would use this surfboard as a delaying tactic when it was time to get out of the water. I would climb up and paddle into the middle of the pool and sit there. Mum or Dad would have to come in after me if they wanted me to get out!
